Cathy Shelbourne:
'The Riddle of the Sands'

Maritime historian Cathy Shelbourne and writer Erskine Childers share a common ancestor. In this talk, Cathy explores the Childers family tree and their connections with Cambridgeshire - and traces Erskine’s career from sailor to spy to author of one of the most famous sailing stories of all time, ‘The Riddle of the Sands’, set in the shifting sands of the German Frisian Islands before the outbreak of the First World War.

Lucy Bruzzone:
'Penguins, Yachts and
a Post Office in Antarctica'

Lucy Bruzzone will share her experience as Port Lockroy Base Leader on the tiny Goudier Island. The island is home to the first permanent British scientific research base in Antarctica, a thousand penguins, a post office and a small team of four for the season. She will introduce some of the many yachts and ships which visited and highlight how travelling to Antarctica got her back into sailing.

Ella Hibbert:
'Sailing for our Climate:
An Arctic Circumnavigation'

Ella Hibbert will talk about her planned single-handed Arctic circumnavigation in her steel hulled yacht 'Yeva'. She started her adventure in 2025, and in that autumn was about half way through, with the yacht over-wintering in Alaska, having completed the NW Passage. Her aim is to finish the journey in 2026 via the NE Passage, drawing attention to the disappearing polar ice caps. She will talk about the journey, and the mental and physical challenges she faced, including ice floes, shallow water and fire on board.

Cathy Brown:
'Attitude’s Summer in Scotland'

Cathy Brown and her husband Richard cruised and raced sailing yachts from the East Coast for more than 40 years before converting to a motorboat – ‘Attitude’ - to enable them to stay afloat in advancing years. Cathy’s talk recounts their first big adventure under power – from the River Orwell they ventured up the East Coast, through the Caledonian Canal, out into the Western Isles and back again – and the new challenges it brought.
